Arthur Rackham
Arthur Rackham was born in London as one of 12 children in 1867. He initially worked as a clerk but in 1892 he quit his job and worked for the Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. In 1903 he married Edyth Starkie, with whom he had one daughter, Barbara, in 1908.
Rackham developed a style that was his own and the breakthrough came in 1905 in a stunning edition of the old Washington Irving classic, Rip van Winkle. This was followed in 1906 by Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens which, alongside A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1908, are regarded as his two masterpieces. Other notable titles include Undine (1909), the Wagner trilogy of The Rhinegold, The Valkyrie, Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods (1910 and 1911), and the Book of Pictures (1913).
His illustrations convey a non-threatening yet fearful thrill and a beauty that was in no way overtly sexy or lewd, a perfect Victorian solution which was reassuring to both children and parents alike. Rackham's early edition prints are much sought after, a testament to the enduring quality of his artwork.
Arthur Rackham died in 1939 in his home in Limpsfield, Surrey.
